Abstract
A high-strength ceramic article is formed to a precise tolerance by calcining a particulate compsn. a principal part of which is alumina (A), and a substantial part of which is a ceramic-forming material (B), the calcination being performed so as to cause vitrification, the calcination temp. being selected so as to produce an article having ap recise degree of contraction, predetermined according to the proportion of material (B). Material (B) is one or more of MgO, silica, clay, or a silicone binder. The composition contains a flux with m.pt. appreciably below that of alumina, e.g. a glass frit or lead bisilicate. It is used in insulators, electronic components, aircraft and missile components.
