Abstract
A mixture of a pulverized ceramic material and an organic binder is formed to a thin shape which is maintained in an atmosphere non-oxidizing with respect to the binder while heating to the sintering temperature of the ceramic, and is then fired to sinter the ceramic to an unitary structure. The process is advantageously applied to that of Specification 882,484 whereby a channelled honeycomb ceramic can be obtained. The atmosphere can be reducing and formed autogenously from the organic binders which carbonize and which are listed. Ceramics specified are various silicates and glasses, and refractories such as sileimanite, magnesium silicates, magnesia, zirconia, zircon, petalite, spodumene, cordierite and corundum.
