Abstract
1,224,894. 894. Two-stroke engines; driving gear. E. H. GRATWICKE. May 1, 1968, No.20713/68. Heading F1B. An engine comprises one or more pairs of opposed two-diameter cylinders 1 and 2, each cylinder having a corresponding two-diameter piston 3 or 4, ports 16 and 17 in the larger diameter portions 1b, 2b of the cylinder pair crossconnected to ports 13, 12 of the smaller diameter cylinder portions 2a, 1a, and inlet ports 20, 21 and exhaust ports 18, 19 in the larger and smaller diameter cylinder portions, respectively. The pistons 3 and 4 are maintained equidistant by a link or links 5 and are provided with rollers 8 engaging a cam 9. The cylinders 1 and 2 have their axes 27 and 28 offset to either side of the shaft axis 29. A plurality of adjacent pairs of cylinders may have their pistons coacting with a plurality of cams on a shaft. A plurality of pairs of cylinders may be arranged radially. The devices 24 and 25 may be spark plugs or fuel injectors. Combustion may occur in the larger diameter cylinder portions to be completed in the smaller diameter portions.
