Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the assembling and economic characteristics of an internal combustion engine whose cylinder bores and pistons have elliptical cross sections by simplifying the driving system of the suction and exhaust valve cam shafts for a plurality of suction and exhaust valves provided for each of the combustion chambers.
CONSTITUTION: A four-cycle internal combustion engine has a cylinder block 1 provided with four cylinder bores 4... having elliptical cross sections and a cylinder head 2 provided with combustion chambers 12... of the same shape corresponding to the cylinder bores 4.... In this, four suction valve openings 13... and four exhaust valve openings 14... are made in the walls of each combustion chamber 12 divided by the short axis s-s of the cross section. These valve openings 13... and 14... are opened and closed respectively by suction valves 211W214 and exhaust valves 311W314 arranged radially, and these valves are actuated by four suction and exhaust valve cam shafts 22, 23 and 32, 33 which are provided in parallel with a crank shaft 10 and at equal distances on a circular arc, and interlocked with the crank shaft 10 through transmission wheels.
