Abstract
1,223,805. Glass tube manufacture; glass fibres. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 29 May, 1969, No. 27162/69. Heading C1M. A hollow open-ended cylinder of glass having a radially graded composition is made by causing molten glass 5 to flow under gravity at a controlled rate down the interior wall of an open-ended tube 2 which rate is determined in relation with a variation with time of the glass composition and of the temperature of the tube 2 so that a succession of substantially uniform thickness layers 6 of solidified glass are built up on the wall. The crucible 1 is heated at 3 and tube 2 at 4 and the glass 5 is flowed over the top of tube 2 to form layer 6 while excess glass 7 flows out at 8. Fresh layers are built up by changing the composition and the required temperature of tube 2 to give discrete layers or alternatively the composition and temperature may be changed continuously. The tube of glass is then removed, preferably by dissolving off the tube 2, and heated and pulled to form a rod and thence a fibre into graded composition. The graded fibre is particularly for fibre optics with refractive index increasing towards the centre. Suggested glasses therefor are initially, in weight percentages: Na 2 O 15; CaO 10; SiO 2 75 which is gradually changed to Na 2 O 20; CaO 10; SiO 2 70 giving the centre with increased refractive index.
