Abstract

1328612 Drawing glass fibres STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 4 Jan 1972 227/72 Heading C1M An optical fibre 10 is produced by forming a glass rod 8 having a core region 7 of higher refractive index by causing molten glass 1 in a crucible 2 to flow under gravity over the rim of a tube 5 and out through its bore, the tube 5 extending vertically through the base of the crucible, the surface of the glass 1 in the crucible being in contact with a substance, such as a tube 4 of a modifying oxide, which reacts with the glass 1 to provide, at least in the region surrounding the rim of the tube 5, a surface layer 6 of higher refractive index than that of the underlying regions of glass 1, which surface layer 6 is entrained down the centre of the tube 5 to form the core 7 of the rod 8 which rod is drawn down to form the fibre 10. The substance may be a vapour, liquid or solid giving either a straight diffusion or an ion exchange. As shown, for a sodium calcium silicate glass 1, the tube 4 is of barium oxide. The crucible 2 is heated by a coil 3 and the level of glass 1 is maintained by the addition of a ring of powdered glass 11 outside the tube 4. Heaters 9 allow the final drawing of the fibre 10 from the rod 8.
