Abstract
1281209 Light-conducting glass fibres; phosphate and silicate fibres NIPPON SELFOC KK 9 Oct 1969 [19 Oct 1968 12 Dec 1968] 49600/69 Headings C1A and C1M Light-conducting glass fibres, having a refractive index distribution such that in any crosssection perpendicular to the central axis of the fibre the refractive index varies continuously from the axis to the fibre surface, are produced by preparing a fibre having a vaporizable component dissolved uniformly therein, the component not being an essential constituent of the glass, and heating the fibre at below the glass deformation temperature for a time sufficient to cause a part of said component to vaporize from the fibre surface, thus causing the concentration of said component to decrease continuously from the centre axis towards the surface. The component, which may be included in the glass in an amount of 0À5-10% by weight, may be H 2 O, N 2 , CO 2 , O 2 , NH 3 or Noble Gas, in which case the refractive index decreases outwards from the axis, or SO 3 , in which case the index increases outwardly. Phosphate glasses comprising an oxide of Mg, Ba, Cd or Zn are particularly suitable. In the examples is disclosed fibres of (1) a zinc phosphate, (2) a barium phosphate, (4) a potassium silicate modified with argon, (5) a sulphate modified sodium silicate and (6) a sulphate modified lead silicate.
