Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of a gap along the boundary of a base material for an optical fiber through preventing the bubbling due to GeO2 and GeO in the manufacture of the base material by a VAD method, by heat treating a porous glass preform in gaseous H2 atmosphere or a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:Porous glass preform 1a is formed at the lower part of rodlike substrate 1 by a VAD method. It is set in heating apparatus 6 lined with quartz tube 3 and heat treated in gaseous H2 atmosphere or a vacuum. Thus, free GeO2 and GeO existing in the vicinity of the surface of preform 1a are removed by evaporation to form an SiO2-rich layer on the outside of preform 1a. Preform 1a is then converted into transparent glass by heating and drawn to form drawn rod. The resulting drawn rod is covered with a quartz jacket and melt stuck to it by heating to manufacture a base material for an optical fiber. Using this base material an optical fiber with less optical transmission loss is obtd.
