Abstract
PURPOSE:The glass for clad layer is molten in a crucible having a fine hole at the bottom and a bare fiber for the core part is passed through the fine hole, thus making the boundary surface clear and preventing the turbulence of refractive index distribution. CONSTITUTION:The production of optical fibers consisting of core and clad two layers made of glasses different in refractive index from each other begins by heat drawing of the parent material for core part 31 to form bare fiber for core part. In the meantime, glass for clad layer 34 is molten in a crucible 36 having a fine hole at the bottom and the bare fiber is passed through the fine hole to form the clad layer, thus the objective optical fiber is produced. The glass for clad layer 34 has preferably lower refractive index, lower thermal expansion coefficient and lower viscosity compared with those of cored part 31, and further high drapeable on the core part.
