Abstract
A glass optical fiber with improved tensile strength which comprises: a core crystal material having a first refractive index; a glass coating material disposed on the surface of the core material and having a second refractive index that is lower than the first refractive index and a first coefficient of thermal expansion; a layer of material on the outer surface of the coating layer and which has a second coefficient of thermal expansion that differs from the first coefficient of thermal expansion, causing a difference in thermal expansion between the coating layer and the outer layer.
