Abstract

Mfr. of a composite solid glass rod, designed for drawing optical fibres comprising a core of glass of high refractive index and a sleeve of glass of low refractive index, fused together, by assembling a mould from a tube of sleeve glass embedded in a non-oxidising powdered material in a holder, and after preheating this mould, and purging the tube with helium, finally pouring molten core glass into the tube and removing the resultant composite glass rod from the mould after cooling.
