Abstract
1,222,640. Ladle storers. NOZZLE Inc. 28 Oct., 1969 [15 Jan., 1969], No. 52724/69. Heading F4B. A gas-operated stopper 1 for a ladle comprises a nozzle seat 3, a nozzle assembly 4 and a gasoperated piston assembly 5. As shown, the nozzle assembly 4 includes a nozzle 12 which is slidably positioned in the nozzle seat 3 and has a centrally disposed opening 17, three spaced passageways 19 extending through the tubular wall 14 of the nozzle 12 into opening 17 for directing molten metal out of the ladle 2. The gas-operated piston assembly 5 is positioned outside of ladle 2 beneath the ladle bottom 7 and is mounted on to the nozzle seat 3. The assembly comprises an annular cylinder wall 24 forming a part of a cylinder chamber 29, a metal cylinder 30 operating within the chamber 29, a compressed air inlet 34, and sealing means 37 secured to the arm 32 of the piston 30 to prevent leakage of the compressed air. In operation, compressed air fed into the chamber 29 forces piston arm 32 upward, and since the lower portion of piston shaft 33 is connected to nozzle 12, the nozzle 12 also moves upwardly permitting molten metal to flow through passageways 19 into nozzle opening 17. The piston shaft 33 has an inert gas passageway 40 leading vertically through the bottom section of the piston shaft 33 and continuing as recess 41 along the surface of shaft 33 which faces nozzle 12. The inert gas, e.g. argon, passing through the recess 41 and a further gap 45 acts as a lubricant to permit easy movement of nozzle 12.
