Abstract

1,177,262. Valves. J. NADRICH, and J. A. ERICSON. 23 March, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 13703/67. Heading F2V. [Also in Division F4] The valve of a bottom pour metallurgical ladle comprises an annular mushroom-shaped rotatable graphite valve head 29 the skirt of which co - operates with a dome-shaped portion 23 and an annular groove or well 24 in a refractory nozzle block 17 and has a slot 35 which may be brought into alignment with a trough or notch 27 in the nozzle block to allow molten metal to pass to a discharge port 25. More than one discharge port with corresponding slots 27, 35 may be provided. Lubrication and sealing between the valve head and the well 24 is provided by cementious material 36 comprising a mixture of silica sand, powdered alumina, and powdered sodium or potassium silicate. The valve head may be turned by a lever 39 or alternatively rotated from above by a refractory stop rod (not shown) connected into a threaded bore 30.
