A composite nozzle for the teeming of molten metal has within a shell 10, an insert 16 composed of a mixture of magnesite and chrome refractory materials, with or without a small percentage of ball clay. In other embodiments, the insert can form either the complete upper part of the nozzle, or just the upper part of the length of the bore.
