Abstract

122,091. Mattson, E. M. March 27, 1918. Valves.-In a fourstroke-cycle engine having four cylinders, a pair of rotary valves 5 controls the distribution, each valve serving for the inlet and exhaust of two adjacent cylinders. The charge enters a space x from an admission pipe 3 and traverses a valve passage 9, which terminates in a port 11. The combustion gases escape through a valve port 8 and a passage 6 which discharges into an exhaust pipe 2. The valves each rotate inside a packing-ring 16, Fig. 6, which is split at 17 and provided with nipples 18 which project into the cylinder ports. The ring is drawn together by a spring 21 and is secured in position by a screwed arm which projects through the valve casing.
