Abstract
1,217,770. Making composite cable sheathing. OLIN CORP. 25 Oct., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967; 11 Sept., 1968], No. 50783/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An aluminium base alloy (see Division C7) is joined to a steel core (e.g. of mild steel, or alloy, such as stainless steel) with a metallurgical bond, the composite is cold rolled to final gauge, heated to 1000-1150‹ F., cooled to below 300‹ F. at a rate of at least 400‹ F./min., heated to 250-400‹ F. for “-24 hours and then cooled to room temperature. The metallurgical bond may be formed by cold rolling plates together, to form a green bond and further cold rolling to give a total reduction of at least 50%, to improve the bond. Alternatively, the core may be heated to at least 300‹ F. prior to rolling. In order to avoid bond degredation at the corecladding interface an interlayer of Al containing at least 0À5% Si may be provided. The composite is formed as a strip for making cable sheaths by conventional methods.
