An adherent corrosion resistant coating is produced on a steel surface by cathodic reduction is an aqueous solution comprising chromic acid e.g. 50g/ 1 CrO 3 and one or more auxiliary agents selected from thiosulphate, sulphite, (di) thiosulphite, pyrosulphite, bisulphite and sulphide, e. g. 0À75g/ 1 Na 2 S 2 O 3 . 5H 2 O. When a circulation cell is used, e. g. electrolyte flowing at a speed of 70 m/min, a metallic Cr film is formed; when a stationary cell is used, a hydrated chromium oxide film is formed.
