Abstract
1,216,564. Railway bogies. ENGLISH STEEL CORP. Ltd. 3 July, 1969 [6 April, 1968], No. 16661/68. Heading B7L. A railway bogie comprises a bogie frame, having a leading axle 10 and a trailing axle 17, and a pony axle 12 in advance of the leading axle 10, the bogie frame including a rigid bolster 1 supported midway between the longitudinal axes of leading and trailing axles 10 and 17 on compression springs 3 in openings 4 in the sidemembers 5 of the bogie frame, the sides 6 of the opening 4 being a close fit to the sides 7 of the ends 2 of the bolster 1 with an arm 8 extending rigidly from the bolster 1 to the pony axle 12. As shown, the arm 8 extends integrally from the middle of the bolster 1 and divides to lie outside the wheels 11 of the pony axle 12 with compression springs 13 housed in the divided ends 14 and seated on pony axle boxes 15. A vertical pivot socket 16 is provided along the arm 8 at a distance from the bolster 1 determined by the weights of the unsprung means such that the pony axle 12 is subjected to an equal or lesser load than the axles 10 or 17; alternatively, the pivot socket is provided at the middle of the bolster 1. The axles 10, 17 of the bogie frame are each provided with a motor and gear-box 9, 19 respectively and the arm 8 is arched over motor and gear-box 9 from the bolster 1 which is also arched between its ends 2. The motor casings may be provided with interengaged extensions so that any reaction on one motor is transmitted to the other as described in Specification 1,216,252.
