Abstract
1,216,421. Aircraft undercarriages. VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHE WERKEFOKKER G.m.b.H. 3 May, 1968, No. 21164/68. Heading B7G. A retractable main undercarriage is mounted on a vertical and short take-off aircraft just aft of the aircraft centre of gravity, and comprises a retractable leg 1 having pivoted at its lower end at 4 a lever which has a wheel 3 at one end, and at the other end an hydraulic jack 7 to pivot the lever about a spindle at 4 to give the wheel two load carrying positions (e.g. as shown in chain dotted lines), the one being nearer the aircraft centre of gravity than the other. There may be a shock absorber 9 incorporating a spring joined to the leg 1 by a pivot 10 and to the lever by a pivot 11. The pivot 10 is mounted on a sliding member 13 located in the leg by toggle links 14, 15. The leg 1 may be retracted by pivoting at 18 under the action of an hydraulic jack 19, there being a further toggle linkage 20 to hold the leg extended. The central pivot 16 of the linkage 14, 15 is joined by a pivoted link 17 to the aircraft to withdraw the member 13 into the leg during retraction, thereby shortening the undercarriage.
