Abstract

121,628. Gilmartin, M. W. April 12, 1916. Projectiles comprise a body A having a separate base C secured by heavy screw-threads, an annular flange 17 fitting into a tapered annular channel in the base, a driving-band 20 secured to the base by a heavy screw - thread and clamped between the body and the base, and means whereby the driving-band is adapted to be expanded against the bore of the gun by the pressure of the propellant gases. The screw-thread securing the band 20 is arranged reversely to the interengaging threads on the body and base. In the construction shown, the driving-band has a thin rear edge 25 partly overlapping a channel 18 in the base, to allow the gun-gases to expand the band as stated. The application of the invention to a shrapnel shell constructed as described in Specification 105,587 is shown.
