Abstract

1,214,274. Fluid cooling heat exchangers. J. G. SATTERTHWAITE and J. B. MACY JNR. 7 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 12184/69. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger intended for mounting on the exterior of the hull 10 of a marine vessel so that a liquid such as water from the vessel's power plant may be cooled by circulation through the heat exchanger by way of connections 21, comprises tubes 13 extending between box-shaped headers 11, 12. Each header is made of a relatively rigid elastomeric material, and consists of two or more sections e.g. 27, 28, 29, placed face to face and clamped together e.g. by bolts (26, Fig. 3), each section having recesses e.g. 43, 46, 47, 48 respectively therein which co-operate to provide openings in which the tube ends are received. A sealing element e.g. 51 is placed on the end of each tube and is sized so that it is gripped tightly in the opening when the header sections are clamped together. The clamping screws pass through co-operating holes in the sections and are screwed into plates 22, 23 welded to the hull 10. A partition 66 may be provided the position of which can be selected according to requirements using slots 69 in the header sections. By this means the header can be made to function as a divided header, or as a return header (by omitting the partition). In other arrangements described, by partitioning both headers the tube assembly may be divided into two separate tube groups for cooling two different fluids. In a further arrangement, tubes may extend from two or more sides of the header box. The tubes 13 may be fluted as shown, or cylindrical.
