Abstract

1,211,858. Rotary - piston internal combustion engines. ROOTES MOTORS Ltd. Dec. 12, 1968 [Sept. 12, 1967], No.41633/67. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I. C. engine of the kind comprising a lobed piston planetarily rotatable with slip engagement within a housing having inlet and exhaust ports in its peripheral wall, in order to vary the extent of breathing overlap between the ports, either or both ports are fitted with a lining sleeve having an eccentric bore which is rotatable or interchangeable with another sleeve to vary the angular position in the port or ports or the degree of eccentricity. As shown, a sleeve 20 having an eccentric angled bore 21 is inserted in the inlet port so that on rotation of the sleeve the position of the cut-off edge 16d may be varied. The position of the cut-off edge may be changed during engine operation. Interchangeable sleeves having bores of different diameters may be fitted. The bores are not necessarily circular but may, e.g. be oval.
