Abstract
1,070,697. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. July 7, 1964 [Aug. 14, 1963], No. 28034/64. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the type comprising a piston (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), having n lobes of epicycloidal profile and arranged to rotate in a planetary manner within a casing or stator (1) having n + 1 lobes whose profiles match those of the lobes on the piston, each lobe in the casing contains a combustion chamber (8) having inlet and outlet parts controlled by valves (3, 4) and a pair of channels (9, 10) are formed in the inner peripheral surface of the casing externally of said chamber and tangentially thereto to effect turbulent flow of the combustible mixture within said chamber when the piston is in a top-dead-centre position relative thereto. The channels may be of arcuate configuration, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the combustion chamber may be of circular or oblongo-circular shape. Alternatively, two pairs of arcuate channels (9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>2</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>2</SP>), Figs.3 and 4 (not shown), may be provided in each lobe on either side of the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber in each lobe may be constituted by a pair of circular cavities (8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>2</SP>), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), which are coaxial with the inlet and outlet ports, a single rectilinear channel (9 or 10) being provided in said surface for each cavity. The turbulent flow of combustible mixture may be improved by rendering the induction pipe (12), Fig. 8 (not shown), arcuate in the region of the inlet port.
