Abstract

1,128,019. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE CO. Ltd. March 11, 1966 [March 13, 1965], No. 10823/66. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the type comprising a casing having a two-lobed epitrochoidal inner peripheral profile and a rotary three-sided piston planetary rotatable therein and having apex seals at its corners controlling the opening and closing of peripheral suction and exhaust ports, includes a regulating valve 1, Fig. 1 of part circular cross-section in the suction port 7 which at low engine speeds partially closes the suction port on that side thereof adjacent the exhaust port 9 thereby reduce the period of overlap between the suction and exhaust ports. At high engine speeds the valve is retracted into a recess in the engine casing to fully open the suction port. The regulating valve which is jointly operable with the engine throttle reduces under low speed operating conditions the amount of overlap in the opening of the suction and discharge ports to prevent the back-flow of exhaust gases into the suction port and the development of negative pressure in the exhaust port, which negative pressure in the case of an engine used for marine propulsion could induce water into the engine.
