Abstract

1,210,388. Centrifugal fans. HOOVER Ltd. Nov.15, 1967 [Nov.15, 1966], No.52058/67. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F2] In a motor-fan unit suitable for handling wet air streams, e.g. for a floor cleaning apparatus, the moist air is prevented from entering the motor casing via the shaft clearance 28 by a sealing arrangement comprising a stationary annulus 35 which projects into a recess 36 in the back plate of the fan impeller. The unit is formed in two halves 1, 2 and is operated with the shaft horizontal as shown. At least the upper portion of the radially outer surface of the annulus 35 diverges towards the fan impeller so that moist air leaking down the clearance gap between the fan impeller and stationary wall 19 is directed away from the shaft clearance 28. Moreover, the fan impeller has a number of axial bores 41, 42 through which moist air leakage is drawn away from the region of the annulus 35, a felt ring 37 being provided to trap large quantities of the moisture. The fan housing has internal ribs 45 to 50 which define channels into which moisture thrown outwardly by the fan impeller is collected for subsequent discharge through the radially-directed fan outlet 12. A motor cooling fan impeller 33 of the paddle type, discharges through an outlet (not shown) arranged adjacent the outlet 12.
