A washing-machine comprises a container for washing liquid, a continuously rotating impeller mounted adjacent a wall of the container with one face referred to as the front, exposed to the washing space in the container, and one or more passageways for admitting liquid from the container to the back of the impeller, the impeller being formed and arranged to act as a centrifugal pump with an annular delivery outlet constituted by the gap between its periphery and the adjacent wall of the container, so that liquid is delivered back to the container through the gap. In the arrangement shown, in which a disc-like impeller A having ribs A<SP>1</SP>, is mounted close to a vertical side wall B<SP>1</SP> of a container B having an inclined wall C between a bottom wall B<SP>5</SP> and an end wall B<SP>3</SP>, a duct D is mounted on the outside of the container and communicates with the rear of the impeller and, through an opening D<SP>1</SP>, with perforations C<SP>1</SP> in the wall C. An opening D<SP>3</SP> in the wall B<SP>1</SP> permits liquid flow from the duct D to the back of the impeller which exerts a centrifugal pumping action to deliver the liquid back into the container through a gap F between the impeller and the wall B<SP>1</SP>. The gap is formed with an annular rib G which surrounds the impeller, or the latter may be located in a recess formed in the wall B<SP>1</SP>. In another arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) the impeller is mounted adjacent an inner wall of the container, the space between the inner and outer walls communicating with the space below the wall C which latter may be formed integrally with the inner wall. In a modification of either of the arrangements, the wall C may be part of the outer wall of the container and the liquid may be admitted direct to the duct D through holes in the wall B<SP>1</SP> in the case of Fig. 1, or holes in the inner wall in the case of Fig. 3. The impeller is pressed from a single thickness of material, the ribs on the front face producing corresponding grooves on the rear face. Alternatively, the rear face of the impeller may be provided with vanes. According to the Provisional Specification the rear side of the impeller is connected by pipes to a distribution box from which a pipe outside the container leads to the sloping wall or other part of the container which may be provided with gauze or perforations.
