Copies of an image (20), Fig. 1d (not shown), on a sheet 21 are produced on copy sheets 33 by magnetizing the image with a magnetic member 24 so that particles 37 of masking material are magnetically attracted towards the image areas and are applied to the upper surface of each sheet 33 by a brush 36. The sheet 21 is supported on a drum 29 and the images on the copy sheets are fixed by a fuser 27. The image on the original may be produced by known zerographic techniques, Figs. 1a-1d, and Fig. 2 (not shown), or by the use in a typewriter (71), Fig. 3a (not shown) of a ribbon (72) which is impregnated with an ink containing particles which can be magnetized. Alternatively the image may be produced from a permanently magnetized material. Fig. 2 (not shown), depicts a modification in which a web (21) carrying a magnetic or magnetized image is fed past a plurality of duplicating stations (52a-52n) at which the image is copied onto a web (56). In the preparation of the original image use may be made of carbon sheet assemblies or a reverse image may be obtained, Fig. 3c (not shown), using a secondary support (75) to which the image is transferred using adhesive or magnetic attraction. Fig. 3f (not shown), depicts an alternative process in which the powder (37) is applied directly to the image on the original.
