Abstract

1,177,579. Developing electrostatic images. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. Nov. 1, 1967 [Nov. 7, 1966], No.49621/67. Heading G2H. A latent electrostatic image formed on a di-electric web by electro-graphic printing or on a web 10 having a zinc oxide coating 10a by charging and exposure in known manner is developed by moving the web adjacent an inking roller 28 and applying a potential difference between the surface of the roller 28 and the uncharged areas on the web so that ink is attracted in an unsupported column from the surface to these areas. The roller 28 dips in ink supply 30. A doctor blade 33 spaced from the roller 28 provides a required thickness of ink on the roller. The roller 28 is connected to a terminal 34 to provide an electric field in the gap 24 which causes ink to rise bodily from the roller surface towards the image surface on the web 10 and deposit on the uncharged image areas. The ink used for developing the latent image may comprise a dye in water. Examples of the dye are Acid green, Acid blue, basic blue, and basic violet. A 1% solution of these dyes provides a self-fixing developer without using resin binders. Alternatively, a colloidal suspension of carbon black in dimineralized water with the addition of polyvinyl alcohol to remedy smearing may be used. Toluene and nitrile silicone may also be used as carrier liquids.
