Abstract

1,207,415. Unsaturated esters. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 31 Dec., 1968 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6111/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] Alkyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acid e.g. methyl acrylate are prepared by a combined oxidation and aldolization reaction by reacting an alcohol RCH 2 OH, where R represents a hydrogen or methyl group, with an ester CH 3 .COOR<SP>1</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> represents methyl or ethyl, at elevated temperature in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst comprising silver or copper, on an aluminosilicate support which is free from pores of diameter smaller than 30Š. The pore size required is obtained by roasting the aluminosilicate for short periods at between 600‹ to 900‹ C. before the silver or copper is deposited. The reaction may take place in air, as the oxygen containing gas. The catalyst may be regenerated by passing air through it. The alumino-silicate may contain alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and manganese, cobalt, zinc or lead ions.
