In a boiler with a cylindrical furnace F and at least two annular water jackets 7 and 9 arranged concentrically around the furnace, two burners B are arranged one at each end of the furnace and a gap 8 between the two portions of the inner water jacket 7 connects the furnace to the annular space between the jackets. The gases passing from the furnace through the gap 8 and the space between the jackets 7 and 9 flow through passages 18 at the ends of the jacket 9 to the space between the jackets 9 and 10 and the flue 29. Water to be heated flows through inlets 21a into the jacket 7 and from the jacket 7 to the jackets 9 and 10 and outlet pipes 26 and 27 through passages 23, 24 and 25. The width of the jackets may increase from the jacket 7 to the jacket 10. The burners B are mounted in hinged doors 4 and may be controlled by thermostats in the outlet pipes 26 and 27. The burners B may be fired one after the other.
