Semi-conductor devices having PN junction areas considerably smaller than the ohmic contact areas are made by providing metallized opposite surfaces of a wafer, e.g. of Si, having a junction 4, with regions 5, 6 of acid-resistive protective material in such a way that the orthogonal projections of the regions 5, 6 only partly overlap. When the wafer is etched from both sides to a depth slightly beyond the junction 4 individual devices such as the diode of Fig. 3 are formed. Matrices of diodes may be formed by shaping the protective regions 5, 6 as mutually perpendicular sets of strips.
