Abstract

926,423. Semi-conductor rectifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 17, 1960, No. 9398/60. Class 37. A semi-conductor rectifier unit comprises two dish-like metal members such as the dished silver plates 2, Fig. 1b, having like convex surfaces, and a semi-conductor junction element 1, e.g. a silicon diode, mounted between said surfaces, as by soldering. This arrangement permits heat dissipation from the element during operation and facilitates a final etching of the edge 4 of the element, which is subsequently varnished. Fig. 2 shows a stack 5 of units housed within an oil-filled impervious ceramic tube 6 closed at both ends by metal caps 7, the stack being kept in compression by a spring 8. In the modified unit shown in Fig. 3b, the silver members 14, 15 have male and female configurations respectively to facilitate the series connection of a plurality of units, and the unit is surrounded by a shield 17 of thermoplastic material. The element may be of N-type material with a diffused P-type region, or may be made otherwise; the metal members may be square, circular, or rectangular, and may be made of any etch-resistant conductor, e.g. gold, platinum.
