Abstract

1,194,747. Tubular heat exchangers. STORK & CO'S APPARATENFABRIEK N.V. GEB. 14 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 56863/67. Heading F4S. In a variable capacity heat exchanger particularly for use in sterilizing or pasteurizing and comprising two concentric helically wound inner and outer tubes 2, 4 respectively, milk supplied to the lower end 1 of the inner tube 2 is heated by steam passed in counter flow downwardly through the outer tube 4. A by-pass 7 interconnects spaced points 8, 9 on the surface of the outer tube 4 with the steam discharge conduit 5. Valves 10, 11 are provided which when turned off isolate the outer tube sections 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> respectively so as to reduce the capacity of the heat exchanger as required; the sections 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> fill with condensate. A condenser 12 is provided in the discharge conduit 5. An alternative form of heat exchanger tube, shown in Fig. 2, is zig-zag in shape, extends in a single plane and has the fluid flow passages provided by two parallel hollow spaces 13, 14 separated by a wall 15.
