Abstract

810,349. Tubular heat exchangers. BROWN FINTUBE CO. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 17, 1956], No. 27766/57. Class 64(3) A polygonally shaped bundle of heat exchange tubes 17 disposed within a cylindrical shell 10 is surrounded by an open ended wrapping 16 which is sealed to the shell thereby constraining fluid flowing longitudinally within the shell to flow only around the tubes. In the form shown the tube bundle comprises a plurality of U-tubes the wrapping 16 surrounding only a finned portion 18 of the tube bundle. The fins on adjacent tubes in the bundle are prevented from intermeshing by bands 36 wrapped around individual tubes as described in Specification 656,519. The wrapping 16 preferably comprises a strip 45 wound helically around the tube bundle with adjacent turns overlapping as shown. A seal 46 provided at one end of the wrapping adjacent the shell inlet 14 to close the space between the wrapping and the shell embodies a rubber or other gasket 50 seated in a groove in a ring member 47 having a flange 51 shaped to embrace the end of the wrapping 16. The ends of the tubes 17 communicate with headers at one end of the shell 10 the free end of the tube bundle being supported on a saddle member 55. The apparatus is said to be suitable for heating oil by means of steam which flows through the tubes, or air may be cooled in flowing over the tubes through which water or other refrigerant is passed.
