[Also in Division G3] A rolling mill incorporates wedges for adjusting the roll gap and an automatic control system for controlling the wedges, in response to forces in the mill, to keep the gap constant. In an embodiment, Fig. 1, figures representing the rolling load F, taken from a load cell 37, the position S o of coarse passing adjusting screws 24, the pre-stressing load P, the position X of screw or hydraulically operated fine pass adjusting wedges 27, and a desired workpiece thickness h<SP>1</SP>, are fed to a calculator 41 whose output control the wedges 27 to monitor the pass constant. Additionally, an output 43 may be used to control the tension of the workpiece passing through the mill. Rods 28 extend between the wedges 27 and the lower chock 14. The two screws and wedges for each housing may be replaced by a central screw and wedge, the bars 28 thereby contacting the housing, or the screw may be removed if the wedge provides sufficient adjustment. The screws 24 for coarse adjustment may alternatively be replaced by spacers positioned between the wedges and housing. In further arrangements (Figs. 7-12, not shown) the bars 28 may be omitted, a spacer may be positioned, between the upper chock and housing, and the wedges 27 may be located between the backing chocks. The pre-stressing cylinder 30 may be dispensed with, a wedge unit then applying a preload which is maintained in each housing by spacers. Alternatively, no pre-stressing is used. A two-high arrangement, suitable for rolling rod, may be used, spacers being positioned between the chocks and each housing, and wedges between the chocks.
