1,191,457. Driving trailer vehicle wheels. D. GOODWIN. 12 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966; 16 Aug., 1966], Nos. 25936/66 and 36591/66. Heading B7H. In a tractor/trailer combination wherein an hydraulic motor 13 on the trailer 12 drives one or more trailer axles through a propeller shaft 14 and is connected by flexible pipes 9 to a pump 6 mounted on the tractor 1 and driven from the tractor gear-box 2 through a power take-off 4 and cardan shaft 5, a by-pass valve 10 actuated pneumatically or electrically from the throttle of the tractor engine is arranged to open when the throttle closes so that the output from the pump 6 passes directly to a reservoir 7 and bypasses the motor 13. A reversing valve 8 linked to the gear-box 2 reverses the flow in the pipes 9 when a reverse ratio is selected. A governing valve 11 connected to the output side of the pump 6 regulates the pump to provide a constant output pressure. A hydro-pneumatic accumulator may be provided in the system to absorb sudden shocks. The pipes 9 may include snap connectors to facilitate easy disconnection, and short flexible pipes may be provided for connecting the pump outlet and inlet and the motor supply and return pipes when the tractor and trailer are separated.
