Abstract

926,831. Vehicle power steering. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Jan 22, 1962 [Feb. 18, 1961], No. 2183/62. Class 79(5). A power-assisted vehicle steering system comprises two continuously driven pressure medium pumps 3, 12 and a change-over valve 15 which operates automatically upon interruption of the supply of pressure medium from the pump 3 to a servomotor 2 to connect the servomotor to the pump 12. The pump 3 is driven by the vehicle engine and the pump 12 is driven through a one-way clutch from the gearbox output shaft or from the back axle. Alternatively both pumps may be driven by the vehicle engine. The changeover valve 15 (Figs. 3, 4) comprises an axially displaceable control piston 20 having annular grooves 26, 27, 28 co-operating with annular grooves 24, 25 in the bore 19 of a housing 18. The pressure of fluid supplied from a reservoir 8 by a pump 3 through a delivery pipe 4a to a chamber 23 normally overcomes the force of a spring 21 to retain the piston 20 in the position shown wherein the fluid supplied by the pump 3 passes via radial channels 32, the annular grooves 28, 25 and a pipe 4a to the servomotor 2 whilst fluid supplied by the pump 12 through a pipe 4b passes via the annular grooves 27, 24 and a return pipe 17 to a pipe 6 which returns fluid from the servomotor 2 to the reservoir 8. When the supply of fluid from the pump 3 to the chamber 23 is interrupted the spring 21 displaces the piston 20 whereby the grooves 27, 25 communicate to connect the pipe 4b to the pipe 4 and the control edges 37 of the grooves 28, 25 engage to disconnect the pipe 4a from the pipe 4. During piston displacement back pressure is prevented by connecting a chamber containing the spring 21 and the groove 24 with a passage 34 and by arranging that the chamber 23 is connected via a bore 30 and the grooves 26, 27 with the return pipe 17 before the control edges 37 engage. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the servomotor is supplied through two interconnected change-over valves from any one of two pumps driven by separate engines and one transmission driven pump. The two changeover valves may be combined in a single unit and the pumps may have individual pressure medium circuits with separate reservoirs and return pipes controlled by the change-over valves.
