Abstract

1,188,244. Two-part couplings. BURNDY CORP. 15 July 1968 [13 July, 1967], No. 33704/68. Heading H2E. An electrical connector, comprising a plug part 12 with projecting contact pins 16 and a socket part 10 having therein contact sockets 14, is sealed against moisture penetration by bonding a continuous sheet gasket 70 of resilient material across the front face of the socket part 10, and then urging the plug contacts 16 through said gasket, so as to form a seal between the gasket and said plug contact pins. To facilitate this, cross-cuts or " blindholes," i.e. rupturable reduced thickness portions, are incorporated in the gasket 70, which returns to its original shape on removal of the plug. The contact pins 16 have pointed end portions 20, and annular recesses in which are surrounding sleeves 78 of dielectric material, so eliminating the effect of any conductive surface film present on the gasket prior to mating of the plug and socket halves. An alignment socket and pin guide the connector halves during the coupling process. A similar gasket 70A may be provided to seal the back of the socket where the tail pieces 62 of the contact sockets 14 emerge.
