[Also in Divisions H2 and H5] In order to produce smaller drops of molten metal dropping from the consumable electrode 1 of an electroslag refining apparatus 2, short pulses of electric current are superimposed on the working current to hasten detachment of the drops. A pick-up 7 detects the current change as a drop forms and through a time relay 9 actuates a control 6 of an ignition contactor 5 for producing the pulses (see Division H2).
