Apparatus for electroslag refining of metal billets includes a screen 6 arranged within a mould 1, the screen being secured to the top edge of the mould and electrically insulated therefrom. The mould 1, consumable electrode 3 and base plate 2 are relatively movable in a vertical direction so that the screen and electrode may be maintained at a constant distance from the molten metal in the mould. The screen may be used several times, any changes in length occurring as a result of a burning off of the lower part of the screen being compensated for by using spacers 7 of different thicknesses.
