An hydraulic press for working and shaping metals comprises mechanical or hydro-mechanical means for rapidly moving a tool-carrying table or a die-carrying table until the pressing tool contacts the workpiece, an hydraulicallyoperated pressing piston for displacing the tool-carrying table so as to work the workpiece and hydraulic and cylinder devices effective only for returning the pressing table to its initial position. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, a piston 22 is displaced by hydraulic fluid introduced into a chamber 24 2 via a valve EVd to cause via linkage 20 1 , 20 2 , 23, a table 21 to be lowered, which table 21 is guided by rams 29 1 , 29 2 displaceable in cylinders 30 1 , 30 2 . When the workpiece has been contacted, a swivel joint 43 of the linkage contacts a switch 8, which reverses a valve EVa to increase the pressure in a chamber 12 which causes a piston 10 and the table 21 to be lowered. The shaped workpiece is removed by an hydraulically-operated ejector 32. The table 21 is returned to its initial position by the rams 29 1 , 29 2 . The stroke of the piston 22 is adjusted by a screw 25 movable by a motor 26, whilst the position of an intermediary table 17 is pre-set by a motor 16 which moves a screw 13, attached to the table 17, within the piston 10. The amount of movement of the tables is indicated by pointers 18, 18 1 . In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the lower die-carrying table 31 is moved by toggle linkage and when the workpiece is contacted the piston 10 is moved to shape it. The shaped workpiece is ejected by a fixed ejector 32 upon the return of the table 31. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the table 21 is moved to contact the workpiece by a thread screw 50 operated by a motor 51.
