BENDING MACHINE.

lhis machine relates to a machine adapted to bend sheet metal plates and strips of ductile material, for architectural and other purposes.
Among the objects of this invention is to obtain a machine by means of which sheet metal of considerable thickness and length can be bent, without said machine being of nate a any considerable weight, and without the meeting edges of the dies of the machine being forced to bend out of horizontal planes. An additional object is to obtain a bending machine which is economically made, is durable, not liable to be broken, or to get out of order, and one the operation whereof is readily understood by those familiar with the art of bending sheet metal. An additional object is to obtain a bending machine which will be economical of the power required to operate it.
In the drawings referred to Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a construction embodying my invention.

1 represents I-beams, which are arranged to form the base of the machine. 2 represents metal plates which' are mounted on horizontal plate 3, which is interposed between said metal plates and the 'I-beams 1. Metal plates 2 are in vertical parallel planes.

Bar 12 is also secured in position by bars 12% Figs. 2 and 3, and bolts 12 and 13. 15 represents a journal bearing which is mounted on the upper end of bar 12, as by bolts 16, Fig. 3. 17, Figs. 1, 2 and 5, represents a bed, on which the lower die, 18, is mounted, being secured thereto, as by the bar's 19 and bolts 20. 21, Fig. 2, represents the base of bed 17, and is mounted on the several vertical plates 2; said plates being cut away to obtain the horizontal tables 22. 23 represents the upper and movable die, which is mounted on the lower edge of the horizontally disposed bar 24. 25 represent the members of a plurality of toggle joints forming a series, which are, respectively, pivotally joined by pins 32. The'lower members of each series of toggle joints are joined at their lower ends, by pivots 26 to said horizontal bar'24. The bar 24 is cut away, adjacent to the lower ends of said lower members 25, as at 27 Fig. 1, to permit said members to be pivotally moved on pins 26 into the position in which they are illustrated in Fig. 1, or'into substantially said" position. 2E5 represents a member or tongue at one end of member 25, and 29 a recess at the other end of said member, (see Fig. 6). 30 represent apertures at one end of member 25, and 31 a similar aperture at the other end of said member. When the shaft 52 is turned to adjust members 48, it is manually operated, preferably by a Stillso-n wrench.
The operation. of the machine is; the motor X being energized and the members 62 and 64: of the friction clutch being engaged, shafts 54, 67 and 68 are rotated. Thereby eccentric 74 is turned and depending mem ber 77 of eccentric strap 75 is forced down and the additional toggle joint formed by members 35 and 36 is actuated and said members are forced into a substantially horizontal plane. The bars 84- are thereby forced longitudinally, one to the left and one to the right as viewed in Fig. 1, and the two series of toggle joints formed by the members 25 are forced into substantially vertical planes, thereby forcing bar 24 and upper die 23 down, and on to a sheet or strip of metal interposed between dies 18 and 23.
The clutch members 62 and 64 being held in engagement until the shaft 68 has made a complete revolution, or substantially so, the several toggle joints will be returned to the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and -2, with die 23 raised'from die 18.
In placing a strip or sheet of ductile metal between dies 18 and 23, of less length or width than thelength of said dies, the ends or sides of said strip or sheet is placed at substantially equal distances from the ends of the dies.
I claim:
1. In a bending machine, two series of toggle joints, pivots oining the meeting ends of the members of said joints, one of said series comprising a plurality of toggle joints, the pivotally joined ends of said members being normally on one side of vertical planes parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through the addi tional pivots of said members, and the other of said series con'iprising a plurality of loggle joints the pivotally joined ends of said. members being normally on the other side of vertical planes also parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through the additional pivots of said last named members, bars horizontally mounted on said .pivots to connect the pivotally joined ends of the members of each series, in combination with an additional toggle joint, one end of the members thereof pivotally joined and the other end of said members pivotally connected to said horizontal bars adjacent to the ends thereof, means to force said joined ends, to move the members of said additional toggle joint substantially into a horizontal plane and the members of the toggle joints of both said series into substantially vertical planes, a bar mounted on the lower ends of the lower members of said series of toggle joints, a die on said bar, and an additional die, said dies arranged to co-act.
2. In a bending machine, two series of toggle joints, pivots joining the meeting ends of the members of said joints, one of said series comprising members the pivotally joined ends whereof are normally on one side of vertical planes parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through th additional pivots of said members, and the other of said series comprising members the pivotally joined ends whereof are normally on the other wide of vertical planes also parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through the additional pivots of said last named members, means to vertically adjust the upper ends of the upper members of said series, bars horizontally mounted on said first named pivots to connect the pivotally joined ends of the members of each series, in combination with an additional toggle joint, one end of the members thereof pivotally joined and the other end of said members, respectively, pivotally connected to one of said horizontal bars, means to force said joined ends to move the members of said additional toggle joint substantially into a horizontal plane and the members of the toggle joints of both said series into substantially vertical planes, a bar, pivots arranged to attach said bar to the lower ends of the lower members of said series of toggle joints, a die on said bar and an additional die, said dies arranged to co-act.
3. In a bending machine, two series of toggle joints, pivots joining the meetin ends of the members of said joints, one or said series comprising members whereof said meeting ends are on one side of vertical planes parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through the additional pivots of said members, and the other of said series comprising members whereof the meeting ends are on the other side of vertical planes also parallel to the ends of the machine and extending through the additional pivots of said last named members, when said toggle joints are in normal position, bars horizontally mounted on said pivots to connect said members pivotally connected to said horizontally mounted bars, in combination with a rotatably mounted shaft, an eccentric rigidly mounted on said shaft, controlled means to turn said shaft, an eccentric strap,

In a bending machine, a plurality oi vertical metal plates secured inparallel planes, portions of the sides of said plates removed to obtain a plurality of horizontal supports and a like number of overhanging portions of said plates above said tables, in combination with a bar adapted to form base of a die, a die on said base, additional bar, an additional die on said additional bar arranged to co-act with said first 1 ed die, controlled means to move said a sntional bar, said means to move comprising; a plurality of series of toggle joints positioned below said over-hanging portions oi? said vertical plates, and means to actuate said toggle joints.
