Abstract
897,344. Forging. WAGNER & CO. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK. Nov. 26, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 40264/59. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for forging a workpiece into a shaped body 24 having an internal recess closed at one end, comprises a pair of dies 10, 13 whose outer edges 11, 15 are arranged to contact and thus define a closed cavity 12, 14, and a plunger 18 movable in one of the dies towards the cavity for forming the recess in the workpiece. The upper die 10 is carried by a piston 4 movable within a cylinder 3 mounted on the ram 1 of a crank-operated press. Plunger 18 biased upwardly by spring 20 which also acts on an ejector and guide sleeve 21, has a piston portion 17 operating within a cylinder 16 formed in piston 4. A heated square or cylindrical steel blank is placed on die 14 and the press ram 1 operated to act through hydraulic or pneumatic fluid in cylinder 3 and press the die 10 downwards thereby shaping the outside of the workpieee. Increasing pressure acting on piston 17 then causes plunger 18 to form the recess. Upon retraction of the ram, sleeve 21 ejects the body from die cavity 12. The die 13 may be a flat plate. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the plunger 18 operates within the lower fixed die 14 and is pressed upwardly by the excess pressure in cylinder 3 acting through pipes 9, 30 and slide valve 39. Hydraulic liquid is supplied to the cylinder 3, 31 from a air.loaded reservoir 33 through valve 34. An excess pressure valve 35 relieves the pressure when the plunger 18 has penetrated to the required depth.
