Abstract
1,037,114. Forging. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 3, 1965 [May 6, 1964], No. 18728/64. Heading B3H. A workpiece is forged between the movable die 27 and fixed die 31 of a press tool whilst being moved hydraulically at half the speed of the movable tool and in the same direction. The workpiece is moved by a manipulator (Fig. 2, not shown) at the desired speed under the control of a cylinder 10 and ram 11. The ram itself is operated through valves 15 and 16 by the outputs of a positional control 35 and pressure switch 36 on the press tool. The valves are supplied from a pump 12 and are actuated by solenoids 22-24, while an accumulator 17, counterbalance valve 18, and speed control valve 20 are in circuit with the cylinder 10. When the upper die 27 on its downward path contacts a workpiece, a pressure rise in the switch 36 causes the ram 11 to be supplied with oil pressure through the valve 20 which has previously been set to cause lowering of the workpiece at half the die speed. The die is automatically returned to its starting positions on completion of the working stroke. The workpiece is held in a peel 44, Fig. 2, which is movable vertically under the control of the ram 11. The inner end 49 of the peel is held between plates 54 which are pivoted at 53. Extension of the ram pivots the plates to raise the end 49, a pin 56 simultaneously drawing a cylinder assembly 51 and platform 50 to the left. A chain 46 is thereby moved by a pulley 48 to raise a block 45 by the same distance as the end 49 is raised, the peel thus remaining horizontal as it is moved.
