Abstract

1,185,672. Stopping pipes. PROSPECT PLASTICS Ltd. 14 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 8920/67. Heading F2P. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for detecting leaks in pipes comprises an inflatable bag 1 connected to a bulb pump 6 by an air line 3, the bag, the pump and the line being made of a synthetic elastomer. The elastomer is preferably a thermoplastic resin such as polyvinyl chloride. The bag is inserted in one end of the pipe under test and connectors 5, 8 are joined. Circumferential ridges 2 form a seal in the pipe when the bag is inflated. A similar bag is inserted in the other end of the pipe, however this latter bag has a tube which passes through the bag to communicate with the space between the bags. The tube is connected through a Tee-junction to a manometer and a bulb pump so that the space between the bags can be pressurized and the pressure monitored. In a modification the tube has a wider diameter and admits smoke to the pipe length under test.
