Abstract
879,151. Pipe connections. SUPERFLEXIT Ltd. July 4, 1960 [July 3, 1959], No. 23003/59. Class 99(1). An end fitting for attachment to a conduit 11, Fig. 1, comprises a flanged inner sleeve 8 insertable into the end of the conduit, an outer sleeve 14 of rubber or thermoplastic adapted to surround the end of the conduit, an externally screw-threaded and peripherally flanged nipple 1 bored to receive the sleeve 14 and having an internal shoulder 10 against which the inner sleeve flange 9 is adapted to abut, a compression ring 15 adapted to enclose the conduit and engage the end face of the sleeve 14, and an internally screw-threaded sleeve nut 18 having an internal shoulder 17 for engaging the compression ring 15, the sleeve nut when screwed on the nipple 1 exerting endwise pressure on the sleeve 14 to cause the latter to expand radially against the conduit and the nipple to provide a seal. As shown, the conduit 11 is made of polyvinyl chloride, a fluorocarbon, a polyamide or natural or synthetic rubber and has internal and external reinforced convolutions. The nipple is secured on a bulkhead 4 by a nut 3 screwed on the spigot end 2 of the nipple, an O-ring 7 being provided in a recess in the nipple to form a seal with the bulkhead 4. Stretching of the conduit is prevented by a flexible tape 19, Fig. 2, sandwiched between the sleeve 14 and the conduit end and between the outer surface of the conduit and the sleeve 14. In a modification, Fig. 4, the nipple is secured to an outlet box 20 by a nut 21 screwed thereon and having a flange 22 engaging a flange 23 on the nipple, a sealing ring 25 being interposed between the box and the nipple.
