Abstract
1,069,623. Turning inside out. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS) Ltd. Nov. 20, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 36599/62. Heading D1X. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for feeding a flexible pipe through a conduit comprises a feed tube connected at one end to one end of the flexible tube, means for admitting fluid under pressure to the connection between the feed tube and the flexible tube for turning the latter inside out and simultaneously progressing it along the conduit, and means for releasing the fluid pressure. As shown, the apparatus is used to seal a conduit 1 which interconnects chambers 3 and 4, and which is reached by a passageway 5. A rigid feed tube 7, positioned in the mouth of passageway 5, is connected at its near end to the open end of a flexible tube 8 which, after passing through tube 7 and through a pair of diaphragm fluid-pressure seals 9, is wound on a reel 11. A cable 12 is attached to the closed end of tube 8 and is also wound on reel 11. A pipe 14, which passes through the seals 9 and enters the space 18 between the tubes 7 and 8, is connectible with a source of compressed air via a non-return valve 17, and is connectible with the atmosphere via a constant-pressure relief valve 16. When compressed air is supplied to pipe 14, tube 8 turns inside out while progressing along passageway 5 until it occupies conduit 1 to seal the latter, the closed end of tube 8 expanding into a recess 19 to lock itself into position. Conduit 1 is provided with cross members 6 against which tube 8 abuts. Cable 12 extends internally of tube 8 to reel 11 and may be wound in to withdraw tube 8, the cable and tube being successively rewound on reel 11. During re-winding, air in tube 8 is discharged through valve 16. The mouth of passageway 5 may be provided with an isolating valve 20. It is stated that tube 8 may be provided with an external inflatable seal which may be positioned to occupy the mouth of passageway 5, or to occupy the conduit 1.
