Abstract

1,184,330. Fluid-pressure jacks. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. 28 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 10994/69. Heading B8J. A traction jack comprises a tubular casing 1 closed at each end by frusto-conical portions 1a, 1b with conduits 3 for pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air. The casing 1 comprises a flexible and non.extensible pod 8 over part of its periphery the remainder being made up by a bellows-like member 9 sealingly connecting the longitudinal edges of the pod 8. Belts 2a, 2b 2c are wound the casing 1 and may be secured to the pod 8 or simply adhere thereto without material fastening. At rest, Figs. 1, 2, i.e. when the casing 1 is not inflated, the pod 8 has its smallest diameter, the bellows-like member 9 lying folded in its opening, which is then at its narrowest. The belts 2a, 2b, 2c are connected at their right hand ends to an anchorage frame 5 in a wall 6, and at their left hand ends to a point 7 of an object to be pulled. Inflation of the jack, Fig. 5, reduces the distance between points 4 and 7 from l o to l g , a shift in point 7 of #l resulting, the jack itself moving #l/2 towards the point 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, a tube 11 extends axially through the casing 1 and has distribution holes 12 for the fluid. The tube 11 also acts to prevent the ends 13 being blown out by the air pressure in the casing 1. Either of the above jacks can be used in combination with other similar jacks, e.g. in a series and/or parallel arrangement. Two separate mobile objects may be moved closer together against counteracting forces by one or more of the jacks.
