Abstract

1,159,362. Inflatable grippers for handling loads. SOC. BERTIN & CIE. 4 May, 1966 [6 May, 1965; 17 Jan., 1966], No. 3628/69. Divided out of 1,159,361. Heading B8H. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for pulling or sliding a plurality of hollow articles 40 through a pipe or passage 39 comprises a plurality of inflatable tubular chambers 3 attached at one end to a common support plate 1 and each being connected at the other end to a further inflatable chamber to form a train of such chambers. The chambers are inserted into the articles 40 and then inflated to grip said articles. The first chambers 3 may be rigidly connected to the support plate or they may be mounted in slots (11), Fig. 4 (not shown), to vary their radial spacing in order to accommodate different sized articles. Adjacent chambers in end-to-end relation are mechanically linked by springs 59 and the interior of the chambers linked by a flexible duct 54. Air is supplied to and withdrawn from the chambers by way of a flexible hose 46 and passageways 43, 44 in the support plate 1. In alternative embodiments (not shown) the inflatable chambers may have shoes to engage the load and adjacent chambers may be connected by bellows.
