Abstract

1,184,184. Electric heating elements. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33569/66. Addition to 892,530. Heading H5H. [Also in Division G1] The electrically heatable element, for detecting combustible gas, of the parent Specification, is modified by using gas impermeable glass as the refractory material in which the platinum heating wire 1 is embedded, by using a gas impermeable fused mixture of glass and conventional refractory material, e.g. alumina or silica, or by coating the conventional refractory material 2 with a gas impermeable glass layer 3. The glass composition is SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , B 2 O 3 , CaO, BaO. The catalytic outer layer 4 may be made from a solution of thorium nitrate and ammonium chloropalladite in nitric acid which may be used alone or on top of a layer formed from a solution of ammonium chloropalladite in nitric acid. The glass should have a softening temperature below 1500‹ C. to prevent damage to the heating wire during formation of the heating element. The glass should not contain materials which might poison the catalyst layer 4.
